This is Pillow Rock rapid on the Upper Gauley River in West Virginia. This rapid can be seen after a short hike from your cabin at Carnifex Ferry Cottages. It is a Class V+ rapid that slams its victims into “Pillow Rock” making this a very difficult rapid to navigate without “swimming!”

The aforementioned “swimming” is about to take place at Pillow Rock rapid. You can take pictures like this while picnicking on the rocks after a few minute hike from your cabin at Carnifex Ferry Cottages. The sound of the rushing water and blood curdling screams make for a very relaxing day at the river!
